Agenda Item #62

Item Title
D-8 School Board-School District Governance (Mrs. McKinnon)

Issue/Rationale

The Clay County School District consistently is rated as one of the top performing school districts in the state of Florida.  The current model of governance with an elected Board and elected Superintendent has served Clay County residents and students well.  In 2015, Clay County School District is going to be reviewed by outside evaluators to determine future accreditation by SACS.  Part of the accreditation process evaluated will be the governance model and Superintendent-School Board relationships.  I am calling on the Board to show solidarity and leadership by adopting a resolution to solidify the Clay County School District governance model.

There is a lot of confusion and misinformation regarding where various members of this Board stand on the issue of appointed versus elected Superintendent.  This Board member proposes to adopt a resolution stating the Clay County School Board desires to support the citizens' right to vote for the Superintendent of Schools by keeping the office of Superintendent as an elected position.
